Celebrating Her Awards for outstanding women in tourism – An urgent message in the face of rapid climate change – The USA continues to be a popular travel destination
Berlin, 8 March 2019 – The Social Media Newsroom of ITB Berlin has online news from the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show at newsroom.itb-berlin.de.
Awards for outstanding women in the tourism industry
Once again, a number of outstanding women in the international tourism industry received honours at the Celebrating Her Awards. The awards are presented in five categories and recognise special achievements in strengthening women’s rights in the tourism industry. This year, the awards were presented to Egyptian Minister of Tourism Rania al Mashat, Jane Madden, managing partner of FINN Partners, Helen Marano, founder and president of Marano Perspectives, Mechthild Maurer, CEO of ECPAT Germany, and Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura.
An urgent appeal from a leading climate scientist
“Business as usual” will lead us into the abyss. That, in as many words, was the urgent message delivered by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, emeritus director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). In his keynote speech at the CSR Day at the ITB Berlin Convention, he implored the industry to take action if we wanted to avoid all our beaches being destroyed at some point due to rising levels. Among other things he proposed a more efficient high-speed rail network in Europe and alternative forms of powering cruise ships.
North America remains a popular travel destination
In a video interview with ITB Berlin, Tilo Kraus-Dünow, chief executive of Canusa Touristik and a member of the board of Visit USA (VUSA), reported on the continuing popularity of trips to the USA. An expert on North America, he explained that the industry can in no way confirm the much-quoted Trump effect. Among the main reasons for the country’s ongoing popularity are its outstanding natural attractions, especially in its many national parks.
